Awards season is right around the corner! With the Golden Globes starting tonight, and the Oscars coming up in less than two months, Claire and I are going to try to watch and review as many potential hopefuls as possible. So first off, I'm going to start with Battle of the Sexes.
For those of you who don't know the premise, Battle of the Sexes is based off a real event from 1973 with the same name. In the event, women's tennis champion Billie Jean King took on the legendary Bobby Riggs in a nationally televised tennis match. Bottom line - Riggs wanted to prove that men were all around better than women, especially on the court. King wanted to prove him wrong.
I knew about the event prior to watching the match, but not the full extent of it. Emma Stone once again proved control of her craft, portraying King's character as headstrong, determined, and fierce. Steve Carell portrays Riggs' character - it's almost like a more misogynistic and demeaning version of Michael Scott. A lot of things that Riggs says to the characters, particularly female ones, are shocking, but in light of what has been going on in Hollywood pertaining to the treatment of women, I think the film makes a poignant point about how women have always been treated. The film is so aptly timed.
Besides the message and the theme of the film, I think it's good to watch for the performances, mainly Stone's and Carell's. Both have been nominated for a Golden Globe, and there has been a lot of Oscar buzz behind it. Some people are saying it's Stone's best performance yet, but I'm tentative to say that while La La Land is still fresh in my mind. Overall, I immensely enjoyed the film. My only qualm was that some of the characters were not well developed, and I wish the filmmakers spent more time with this, especially the relationships between characters. It felt rushed.
Otherwise, I highly recommend watching Battle of the Sexes, mainly for the acting!
